Cherry Spring

Words fail me when I try to describe the orgasm of blossoms on our cherry tree every March.  Standing in our kitchen, the tree monopolizes the view, though I don’t hear anyone complaining. The riot of blossoms is breathtaking, really better left to the camera.

Friday Wanderings

A day off school and a new consignment delivery inspired me to take the ferry to Bainbridge Island last Friday.

We started the afternoon with a brisk walk around the Bloedel Reserve. Wandering around the 150 acre property, we admired many textures, patterns and colors.

It was a feast for the eyes, a breath of fresh air and a reprieve for the ears.

Thanks to Habit of Art for the gorgeous post on her trip to Seattle. Her photography inspired this montage.

Modern Egg Ornaments

This collection of merino egg ornaments was a special commission by a customer who loved the felt ball ornaments I made for her at Christmas.  Hung on a large swag of branches from a tall vase above her sunken living room, they made an impressive display in her ultra sleek, modernist home. She loved the felt balls so much, they were still hanging in mid-February. As signs of spring and Easter began to appear, she thought it would be nice to swap out the sequined balls for eggs.

Looking at color samples, she selected dijon, wine, carbon and pewter merino, opting for a matte finish instead of the heathered roving I used for the balls. I needlefelted the cores out of Harrisville wool in the closest color I could find, then covered them in short pieces of merino. The trickiest part was getting an even covering and a firm finish on the merino.

This project falls into the category: why I love my customers. The colors and shapes were a departure from my normal palette, but the finished product looks great. Leaving the idea work to someone else provides a challenge that ultimately expands my horizons.

Hatching Plans

It has been months since I last wrote about my felting projects, which isn’t to say the studio has been quiet.

There are lots of projects cooking, but delays abound so I haven’t been able to write about them. More soon. Promise.
